Physiotherapy, also referred to as physical therapy, involves evaluating, diagnosing, and treating a range of diseases, disorders, and disabilities using physical means. Practiced by physiotherapists or physical therapists, it is considered within the realm of conventional medicine. Methods for diagnosis can vary, depending on the situation, though physical examinations and testing are often employed for evaluation. Treatments can include a wide range of practices, including massage, applications of heat or electricity, and assistance with using mobility devices such as walkers and crutches.

As a primary health care professional, your NHC physiotherapist combines in-depth knowledge of how the body works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability. Physiotherapists prescribe personalized therapeutic exercises, and provide essential education about the body: what keeps it from moving well, how to restore mobility and independence, and how to avoid or prevent bodily harm.

Physiotherapy Treatments

The Physiotherapist's assessment which includes discussion of relevant history and physical examination will assist in better evaluating the patient's condition and performing the diagnosis. These concerns will be different for everyone, but could include:

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Poor stability or balance
  • Difficulty participating fully in a sport
  • Difficulty walking or moving

From this individualized list, the Physiotherapist will work with the client to identify realistic and achievable goals. For example:

  • Short-term goals: decreasing pain and swelling; increasing movement
  • Long-term goals: return to playing a sport; return to work; restore or maintain independence at home

The Physiotherapist at NHC prides on taking the time to work one-on-one with patients to formulate a treatment plan that focuses on active achievement of goals.
